MOdal verbs MAY and MIGHT

Other important modal verbs are may and might, both of which refer to a present or future possibility, similarly to the modal verb could.

The negative forms of may are written as may not or mayn’t. The negative of the modal verb might is written similarly as might not or mightn’t.

It may rain. It might rain. – Może padać.

It might be true. It may be true. – To może być prawda.

He may come. He might come. – On może przyjść.

Uwaga! Warto również zwrócić uwagę na pisownię wyrażeń may be i maybe, choć wymowa jest taka sama, pierwsze z nich to właśnie czasownik modalny np.:

It may be sunny. – Może być słonecznie.

Natomiast maybe jest przysłówkiem i znaczy: może, być może.

Maybe he had an accident. – Może miał wypadek.

Maybe he is stuck in a traffic jam. – Może utknął w korku.

We could also paraphrase this last sentence using the modal verb may, might.

He may be stuck in a traffic jam. – On mógł utknąć w korku.

MAY and MIGHT – positive sentences


I may be late. I might be late. – Może się spóźnię.

You may be satisisfied. You might be satisfied. – Możesz by zadowolony.

He may be a doctor. He might be a doctor. – On może być lekarzem.

She may be a policewoman. She might be a policewoman. – Ona może być policjantką.

It may hail. It might hail. – Może padać grad.

We may be invited. We might be invited. – Możemy być zaproszeni.

You may be laid off. You might be laid off. – Możecie być zwolnieni.

They may come tomorrow. They might come tomorrow. – Oni mogą przyjść jutro.

MAY and MIGHT – negative sentences

I may not come. I might not come. I mightn’t come. – Mogę nie przyjść.

You may not know it. You might not know it. You mightn’t know it. – Możesz tego nie wiedzieć.

It may not work. It might not work. It mightn’t work. – To może nie działać.

We may not qualify. We might not qualify. We mightn’t qualify. – Możemy się nie zakwalifikować.

You may not do it on your own. You might not do it on your own. You mightn’t do it on your own. – Możecie tego nie zrobić sami.

They may not know how to get here. They might not know how to get here. They mightn’t know how to get here. – Oni mogą nie wiedzieć jak tu dotrzeć.

MAY and MIGHT – questions

In questions, may can mean permission, in which case it will have a similar meaning to can or could. Similarly might, but it is more formal.

May I open the window? Might I open the window? – Czy mogę otworzyć okno?

May you explain that to me? Might you explain that to me? – Czy możesz mi to wyjaśnić?

May he come? Might he come? – Czy on może przyjść?

May she be upset? Might she be upset? – Czy ona może być zasmucona?

May it rain? Might it rain? – Czy może padać?

May we sleep over at my friends? Might we sleep over at my friends? – Czy możemy spać u moich przyjaciół?

May you see us off? Might you see us off? – Czy możecie nas odprowadzić?

May they sketch that for us? Might they sketch that for us? – Czy oni mogą to dla nas naszkicować?
